SWC Member Sara Bostock (2016 Jinks’ Sister) will introduce her sister Jane Bradbury, author with Edward Maeder, retired Costume Curator (from the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York and Los Angeles County Museum of Art), of the recently published book American Style and Spirit: Fashions and Lives of the Roddis Family 1850-1995.

Jane will give a talk entitled “Women, Education, and Fashion in America 1850-1988: Insights from the Roddis Collection.” She will touch on women’s clubs, civic and personal development, home sewing, and the role of fashion in the lives of a Midwestern family from the mid-19th century. Slides of stunning dresses, now on display at a highly acclaimed exhibition of the collection at the Henry Ford Museum near Detroit, will be shown.

An informal discussion and refreshments will follow. Copies of the book, published by the Victoria and Albert Museum, and described as “substantive and mesmerizing” by theNew York Times, will be available for sale at a discounted price of $40 and may be signed upon request. Please bring cash or check.
